After my shift at the lumberyard and kicking around a soccer ball with Ben at the local park, I swing by the supermarket.

I tell myself I’m here for tomatoes and cheese, but I’m far too pleased to spot Andre.

His piercings aren’t in today and his face borders on swollen. He barely looks fit to work, but when he sees me and smirks, the tiny bit of sympathy I have for him vanishes.

“Marco,” he says, scanning my stuff. “Nice of you to choose my line.”

No preamble, I get right to it. “Other than make you eat worms, what more did Oskar do?”

“Yes, I’m doing fine, thank you. Flu kicked my ass, though.”

I shovel my shopping into a bag. “I’m sure you kicked back as hard as you could.”

He pauses with the spinach, mouth flattening. “Look, maybe you should ask Oskar.”

“Why won’t you tell me?”

He swipes the spinach and ends with the shredded chicken. “Because I’ve been thinking about a lot of shit recently and . . . I don’t think it’s up to me to tell you. He’s not the bad guy you think he is.”

I thrust the money at him. “How would you know what I think of him?”

“You were best friends,” he says, carefully tilling the cash and giving me my change. “You wouldn’t be asking me these questions if you still are.”
